The Critical Drinker is not a critical thinker

The Critical Drinker blames the failure of new Star Wars movies on the “deconstruction” of traditional heroic storytelling. It’s a typically reactionary position that is ignorant of amazing storytellers who base their stories on deconstruction like Alan Moore, Iain M Banks and Terry Pratchett. It’s clear that the Critical Drinker is not a critical thinker. But the problems with reactionary reviewers go much deeper.

      1. Sorry sir, he is 100% right about Rings of Powerlessness. It’s pure trash. The writing in Lucifer with Tom Ellis was better than that show. No critical thinking required to see how weak that writing is.

    1. That’s it?

One line to critique the Drinker?

      You are an idiot, sir.

What kind of a stupid article is this?

At least the Drinker gives more than one line to critique a movie.

      HAIL DRINKER!!!

  1. But isn’t a critic’s job to react to stuff. Why are you labeling him as a reactor as if that’s a way of dismissing his point on star wars without actually challenging it

  2. Thanks for this Damien. Hits the nail on the head.

The funny thing is Jordan just had Mark Millar on his podcast and was fawning all over him. Pretty much all of Millar’s works are deconstruction of traditional tropes, mainly superheroes. But he does also complain about “wokeness” so played to the choir with that pish.

    He’s a fud.

    1. Critical Drinker praised House of the Dragon despite the alleged “wokeness” of the cast—as did audiences and critics. Maybe that means Rings of Power and these Star Wars movies actually suck?

  3. Ah, I see you take a single point and use that as the basis of your objection to somebody’s opinion. The deconstruction of heroic stereotypes indeed does not need to be a bad thing, other have done it well, as you point out. However, they have done so within a framework of a universe created to support such deconstruction, it makes sense within the world they have created. In Star Wars it becomes such a jarring tonal shift that it feels as if the universe has been upended and that’s where the problem lays.

To give you and example of how it feels, it would be like writing a sequel to The Piano where George has become tired of life with Ada, Florence having grown an left to live with an army officer in India and in which he decides to recover the piano from the sea by getting a team together, arming themselves and battling natives to get to their goal where in he kills a tribal leader to take possession of the titular instrument. A film like that might appeal to some and it would certainly be a very different tale on the original’s themes. Maybe it could be directed by Michael Bay, for that truly impressive look and feel. That’s what the Star Wars sequels, TLJ in particular, are, a complete destruction of what was good about the themes of the originals.

  4. Shouldn’t you just stick to being on British book welfare for the book you’re never going to finish and epically weak sauce takes?

  5. Well his content and analysis clearly resonated with a heck of a lot of people, and imo, it’s because he articulates brilliantly what we are feeling when we watch these movies, and how sick we are of Woke nonsense being shoved down our throats and destroying our beloved IPs and franchises.

He must be striking some kind of chord if he’s garnered almost 2M subscribers and a very active audience who watch his videos instantly upon publication, leading him to get 500k-1M views in a day.

  6. hahahah fucking trash article.

I have not come across a youtuber whom I whole heartily agree with more than the critical drinker.

I would buy that man a pint of whiskey any day.

  7. 2 years in, and time was not kind to this article. The critical drinker is still around and his audience is strong while the author here resorts to petty insults and griefing.
