The 21 most significant science fiction storytellers of the 21st century (so far)

01

01. Denis Villeneuve

New media are threatening, but as of 2021 the Hollywood blockbuster remains the gold standard of scifi. Arrival, Blade Runner 2049 and Dune have established Denis Villeneuve as the unrivalled master of science fiction storytelling. Villeneuve pushes the possibilities of CG and special effects to their limits to visualise scifi worlds with a depth of realism that has never been achieved before. Is he the 21st century Stanley Kubrick? Not quite. Instead he’s something different, the best of the cinema directors working in the new age of CG driven storytelling.

    1. I went ahead and watched it. Part 2 is much better. But still, it does not tell the complete story as the previous movies.

  1. Great article, you’ve fueled a half dozen Holds to be placed at my local library. I like your spread of formats/media, I feel that your fascination with technology and medium-as-message (as you put it) really enrich your insights and analysis.

I love Denis as much as anyone, but I’m sad that his new entry into Dune’s canon means we won’t see someone attempt to produce Jodorowski’s Dune for at least another decade or two now.
