What is the PROBLEM with transhumanism?

We’re exploring The Machine in the new series of video essays on the Science Fiction channel…

…and one upcoming essay in that series is Those Transhuman Bstrds : a history of transhumanity.

Here’s a little preview.

The modern world is built around a powerful mythic image

THE MACHINE

We think of reality as a big machine. Society as a machine we can shape with laws and policy. And we think of humans as “biological machines”.

Once you accept the logic of Man-As-Machine the assumptions of Transhumanism become inevitable.

The human machine can be repaired. The human machine can be optimised. The human machine can be TRANSCENDED.

And escaped.

But like all myths before it, THE MACHINE is neccesary but incomplete. There is much we can learn from understanding Man-as-Machine. But much more of being human is lost.

Transhumanism then inevitably becomes profoundly anti-human. A reductive concept of what the Human is, that its adherents cannot see or think beyond.

In a podcast episode from 2022 I debunked many transhumanist claims made by Elise Bohan in her book Future Superhuman.
