Star Wars : beyond the hero’s journey

Part Three of Advanced Science Fiction & Fantasy: writing the 21st century myth

Star Wars changed cinema forever, introducing the would to the “scifi blockbuster” that has dominated box offices for the last four decades. To create his masterpiece George Lucas employed an ancient structure of mythic storytelling discovered by Joseph Campbell – the Hero’s Journey.

But the further away from the Hero’s Journey the Star Wars movies get, the worse they become. Campbell’s “Monomyth” is only the beginning of a much bigger pattern of story. By learning that pattern we can tell stories that go far beyond the Hero’s Journey.

The third part of Writing the 21st Century Myth introduces the Hero’s Journey of Joseph Campbell – and how to write beyond it
