There’s a long history of calling Lord of the Rings fascist.
Michael Moorcock in Epic Pooh of course.
But Tolkien’s book is on the list of things that leftists tend to kneejerk reject as fascist.
No doubt somebody will post Tolkien’s letter rejecting a German publisher in the comments. Which is fair, Tolkien was no fascist.
Tolkien was a High Tory. Possibly in more ways than one, given his interest in pipe weed. But ideologically Tolkien was – by an measure – very, very conservative.
And the line between Very Conservative and A Little Bit Fascist gets a bit blurry, especially for people on the further left of the political spectrum, from where all conservatives look alike.
So in this episode of the Science Fiction podcast I deep dive into the reasons LotR is seen as fascist by some, then make my defence of Tolkien’s great myth for the modern world.
The problem, mostly and mainly, around the world, is viceversa; is not that leftists think that Tolkien is kinda fascist – I am a leftist elector and I love LOTR and the Tolkien’s Oper Omnia since the first time I read it -, but it is that fascists didn’t understand The Lord of the Rings at all, wanting to appropriate some cultural masterpieces for their very poor pantheon.
