Welcome to the New Despondency
The Internet was going to make information free. Instead we have four giant tech companies and too many paywalls.
We built a giant high energy collider to reveal new levels of reality and it didn’t find anything.
The world was going to become one global village of liberal capitalist states trading in peace and instead we have war in Europe again.
The “Leisure Society” never showed-up instead it costs hundreds of thousands of dollars just to get a degree.
We were going to fly to the stars and explore strange new worlds to meet humanoid aliens with oddly textured foreheads. But it turns out travel times are tens of thousands of years and we may be the only ones here alone in the dark.
Oh. And the AI technology growing at exponential rates is the one science fiction has spent decades warning will destroy human civilisation as we know.
It’s no wonder we’re all feeling despondent about the future.
What the F happened?
I don’t have the answer but I do think we have to be honest and let go of ideas that have proven to be fantasies. The starships aren’t happening.
So what do we do instead?
