The most Important act of critique is on the stories you most love.
I like this comment on The Culture of Iain M Banks because it gets to the heart of why.

I love the Culture, but I’ve spent the last year, while researching and making the video essay, trying to destroy it. To see what I can learn.
If you believe that material reality is all there is, then the Culture’s project of maximising pleasure and minimising suffering is an absolute good.
But if you believe in any kind of immaterial existence, then the Culture is a spiritual trap and its Mind’s are gnostic Demiurges trapping eternal life in matter.
That’s why there can never be an accord between science and religion. Their purposes are crossed by a question that can only ever be a matter of faith.
Of course life in the Culture, however long, is still a flicker of a gnat’s wing in eternity. And after that whatever happens happens.
So I’ll still bet on the Culture.
