One of the reasons I think the search for a 21st century mythos is worthwhile is because without one
we are reverting to fascism
Philip K Dick understood that fascism is primarily a story. And what defeats fascism is a better story.
So instead of an alt-history, PKD wrote a science fiction book of alt-narrative
Modernity’s great weakness is that it tries to get humans to live without stories. To be data driven animals. But we are storytelling animals.
Fascism is a reversion to human scale stories of empire, nation, blood & soil. In the absence of any more compelling narrative of the future, people will look back to the past.
All warfare is fundamentally narrative warfare. Which story will we live, and who gets to write it.
Until we can find a better story for people to fight for, the fascists will keep on winning this war.
